International Association of Athletics Federatio n wrong on girl’s gender
Semenya is a girl and she is fast. Let her be
There can be no excuse on the part of officials of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) for the shame and disrepute they heaped on 18-year-old South Africa 800 meters runner Caster Semenya.
Relentless in their desire to cast aspersions on the teenager after she demolished the field in the 800 meters at the World Games in Berlin in August, IAAF officials immediately went berserk about her gender.
First, they wondered if she is really a girl, then acted in a most unethical and foolish manner by ordering her to undergo a gender test, which they say reveals that Semenya is a hermaphrodite with ingrown testes.
Apparently these officials see nothing wrong with the global humiliation of a young girl who for much of her life has had to deal with snide and malicious musings just because of the way she looks.
It started when Semenya blew the field away in the World’s with a world record time of 1:56.72 in the 800-metre race.
It wasn’t long before Australian media started speculating on her gender, and this was picked up by the organizer who instead of defending and protecting the integrity of the innocent young girl added fuel to the inflammatory situation with talk of gender tests.
All of a sudden, the world’s attention was focused on a more complex exploration of the human anatomy with a lot of confusing talk about hormones, external reproductive organs and internal reproductive features.
Semenya is a girl, biologically.
Her mother said so and her father said so.
In the midst of the controversy her dad, Jacob, dismissed speculation about his daughter’s gender, telling a newspaper: "she is my little girl.”
Through all this nastiness, it is hoped that good sense and decency will prevail and this talented young girl will be allowed to regain her dignity.
According to a doctor affiliated with the IAAF “She's born a female, raised as a female through puberty. Whatever is found, with the exception of deliberate substance abuse, she's going to have to be allowed to compete as a female.”
Hopefully he convinces his friends to act decently and let Semenya run in peace.
