Rev. Kingsley J. Morrison and wife Jacqueline bring a much-needed set of hands to the task of community building and youth empowerment.
Just about a year into the job as senior pastor at Montréal West Church of God of Prophecy, Rev. Morrison is already well into the work of engaging his young parishioners with the simple but profound Christian principle that “choice not chance determines destiny.”
“These are challenging times and although today’s generation is very open to issues of spirituality, we (spiritual leaders) must find innovative ways to engage them, bring them in and keep them,” he told Community CONTACT recently. “But to do that, we must think outside the box.”
“And part of that conversation has to be about truth and choices, knowing that all truth is God’s choice,” he says. “And their challenge is, in the midst of all the distractions, to live lives of purpose and destiny.”
Rev. Morrison, who served as the Youth and Young Adult Pastor at the Toronto New Covenant Cathedral in Pickering, brings to our community a wealth of experience in counseling and working with young adults.
He says his commitment is not to be restricted within the walls of his church but to reach into the community, spread the word, lead by example and try “to add value to people’s lives.”
Also, part of his spiritual package which he hopes to utilize soon enough in reaching and communicating with young people, is his musical abilities. The word is he has quite a talent as a guitarist and singer.
Just as eager and excited about delving into the duty of community service is Pastor Morrison’s wife, Jacqueline, a trained motivational facilitator who has seen the benefits of going into neighborhoods and offering a hand up in words and deeds, to those who in need.
She refers to a successful initiative she brought to an inner city neighborhood in Toronto in which women, young and old, participated in a sewing program that equipped them with a useful and marketable skill.
Mrs. Morrison also spoke about accompanying her skill-delivery program with a message of empowerment, reminding them of the habits of living effective and successful faith based lives.
Mr. and Mrs. Morrison, parents of three sons – Rommel, Justin and Nathan – say they are bolstered by the reception they have received from their congregation and other Montrealers so far.
Much of their first year has been spent on the rejuvenation of the congregational ministries at the church, such as the youth group, Kingdom Chasers and the women’s group, Kingdom Women.
In the near future they are looking forward to meeting other spiritual and community leaders and doing what is fundamental to their calling: putting faith in action.
Rev. Morrison celebrates service every Sunday at Montreal West Church of God of Prophecy, 5255 rue de Sorel. Montreal, (opposite Metro de la Savane).
