They call Toronto the Queen's City, but when it comes to our Caribbean culture, Montreal should be called the King. People like Mikey Dangerous is dominating the Canadian reggae industry. Reggae Diva Nikki Trikky is taking charge or her own destiny. Salah Steelpan Academy took the Toronto Pan Alive title for the third time in a row and Alicia Anderson, landed her second consecutive victory by grasping the 2009 Caribana Female Individual Of The Year title.
Toronto King and Queen of the Bands Competition was held on Thursday July 30, at Lamport Stadium. Alicia a.k.a. Montreal Dancehall Queen "Lady Splitz" portraying “Maria, The Samba Dancer beat out 13 contenders swaying to beat the sounds of Fay Ann Lyons “Meet Superblue” to take the title for the second year straight..
In 2008 she portrayed “The Birth Of We Rhythm by Genesis Carnival.
Alicia started playing mas at the age of five, when her mother Pat Dillon introduced her to the Montreal band. Roots It was there and then that she acquired her love for the artistry of mas and the joy of being in a costume.
Alicia won Montreal Junior Queen eight times and placed second three times as Queen of The Bands..
But Alicia is so much more than mas, with Jamaican blood running through her vain, Alicia founded Montreal first Dancehall Dance group called Mystique Dancers in 2003 where she was branded the name “Lady Splitz” and went on to win Montreal Dancehall Queen competition three years later..
Salah Steelpan Academy Reigns
The Pan Alive Competition was held on Friday July 31, at Lamport Stadium. where Salah’s Steelpan Academy playing “First In Line” triumphed over New Dimension by three points, accomplishing the unprecedented hat-trick., compose by Alvin Daniel and Edwin Pouchet.
Salah Steelpan Academy has its roots in "Salah and Family Steelpan Workshop , which was founded in 1987 with six children and wife, .
Since then his accomplishments have been plenty, winning the Toronto competition in 1995 when he with a small group of seven players.
In 1997 his dream of teaching Steelpan became a reality when he and his established their own private music school then called the Salah & Family Steelpan Music Academy.
In both cities Salah’s Steelpan Academy reigns, winning the steelpan title seven times in Montreal and five in Toronto.
